About Me

Dan Dexter

My name is Dan Dexter.  I never was the “camera guy” growing up, though I was always very artistic.  I ended up going to college for an Associates in Applied Science studying Civil Engineering after high school, but part way through I made a life-changing discovery. Photography would soon change my life and I had no idea. Inspired by a friend who went to The Art Institute of Pittsburgh for photography, I purchased my first digital SLR opposing my friend’s recommendations to not buy an expensive camera. Being a very technical individual I forced myself to learn the ins and outs of the camera before I really started to use it.

Then came the research and macro photography threw itself in front of me.  Photographing the world we walk in with such detail fascinated me to no end, then came bugs…I realized bugs were the extreme of macro because they were constantly moving making the “wow” shots even more rewarding.

Now I’ve got four images at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, an insect photograph used by National Geographic Kids,  and people are asking me how I get so close to the bugs.  The feeling is indescribable that I left a life of civil engineering to become a photographer, and I am gradually starting to become successful.  Thanks to all my friends and family for the support.  I couldn’t have made it without them.
